Die Forschungsschwerpunkte der Professur sollen auf dem Gebiet der RNA- oder DNA-Regulation liegen und auf innovativen bioinformatischen Methoden beruhen. Mögliche Anwendungsgebiete sind u.a. epigenetische Regulationsmechanismen, Mutationseffekte in DNA- und RNA-abhängigen Prozessen, das Design von Nukleinsäure-Enzymen und Therapeutika oder die Charakterisierung modifizierter Nukleotide in DNA und RNA. Eine Mitwirkung bei der Gründung und Weiterentwicklung von Forschungsverbünden wird erwartet. Erfahrungen bei der Einwerbung von Drittmitteln werden vorausgesetzt.
