The Chair of Development Economics (Professor Michael Grimm) of the School of Business, Economics and Information Systems of the University of Passau invites applications for the position of:
Candidates are expected to engage in field work, to present their work at international conferences and workshops and to engage with donor and implementing agencies such as the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and its implementing agencies (KfW, GIZ) and international organisations such as the World Bank and the United Nations Organization. Doctoral candidates have access to a wide range of doctoral-level courses offered by the University of Passau and the Bavarian Graduate Program in Economics (BGPE). Moreover, they may conduct part of their doctoral research at one of our partner universities during a research stay.
The Chair is involved in three major degree programmes: B.Sc. Business Administration and Economics, M.Sc. International Economics and Business, and M.A. Development Studies. The successful candidate will participate in the teaching activities of the Chair, specifically the courses Microeconomics and Growth and Development (both forming part of the B.Sc. programme) and various specialised Master's-level courses and seminars in Development Economics, such as Micro Development Economics; Health, Development and Public Policy; and Evaluation of Development Policies.
The team is supported by other employed and external doctoral students, one postdoctoral researcher, three professors, a secretary and several student assistants.
In addition to development economics, the School of Business, Economics and Information Systems undertakes research in social policy and family economics, international economics and trade as well as the economics of institutions, governance and corruption. The Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences has a focus on development sociology and sustainability and development politics with a special regional
expertise in South and South-East Asia.
The town
Passau is one of Germany's loveliest towns and is also known as the 'City of Three Rivers'. Its Old Town features beautiful baroque architecture and the nearby Alps as well as the Bavarian Forest offer a rich selection of top-notch sports and leisure activities.
Appointment and salary
Successful candidates can start as soon as possible, but the latest on April 1, 2024. Remuneration for the position is in line with pay grade TV-L E13 of the German publicsector salary scale, with the social benefits applicable for public-sector employees. The position is offered at 66% full-time equivalent (0.66 FTE) and with a fixed term of three years, although extension by another year is possible.

Job description
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to study towards a doctorate and to conduct research in relation to the research undertaken by the Chair. Ongoing research is centred around interventions to prevent and control non-communicable diseases in South-East Asia, interventions supporting micro-, small and medium-sized firms in Burkina Faso, training interventions to enhance sustainable farming in Indonesia and interventions to enhance female empowerment in conjunction with food security in Bangladesh and Ethiopia, among others. Requirements
The successful candidate will have recently gained his or her M.A./M.Sc. in Economics (with a minor or major in Development Economics) or Development Studies or be near completion. The position requires strong quantitative skills and the ability to handle and manage large and complex micro data sets in STATA. Field experience and expertise in one or several countries in the Global South is desirable. Initial experience in a teaching assistant role for economics courses would be beneficial. Candidates should be flexible team workers with good planning and organisational skills, an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and an excellent command of both English and German.The University of Passau
